Open MRI

Open MRI

Our Open MRI system at West Imaging Center is designed to provide a more comfortable and accessible imaging experience for patients. The open design reduces the anxiety and discomfort often associated with traditional closed MRI machines, making it an excellent option for those who may feel claustrophobic or require more space.

What is Open MRI?

Open MRI is a type of magnetic resonance imaging that uses the same technology—magnetic fields, radio waves, and computers—to create detailed images of the body’s internal structures, but with a key difference: the design of the machine is open on the sides. This allows patients to feel less confined while still providing clear and precise diagnostic images.

What to Expect During Your Open MRI Exam

You will be positioned on a padded table that will gently slide into the open MRI machine. The open design helps alleviate the feelings of confinement often experienced with traditional MRI machines. During the exam, you will need to remain as still as possible while the machine takes images. As with standard MRI, the procedure is painless, though you may hear some soft knocking or buzzing sounds during the imaging process.

A technologist will be nearby at all times to assist you and answer any questions. Most Open MRI exams are completed in under an hour.

Preparation for Your Open MRI Exam

No special preparation is usually required for an Open MRI. You can eat, drink, and take medications as usual unless your doctor advises otherwise. However, it’s important to inform your physician or the technologist if you have any metal implants, such as pacemakers, prosthetics, or surgical clips, as they can interfere with the magnetic field.

Make sure to remove any metallic items (e.g., jewelry, watches, or hairpins) before the exam.
